December 2016 - The Heart of England Forest

2016 – a vintage year for the Forest

2016 has been a remarkable year for the Heart of England Forest, with a number of standout moments that will define it for anyone who has supported or been involved in the project. The man charged with ensuring our ambitious tree planting programme stays on track is Head Forester Stephen Coffey. Here he recalls five moments that will linger long in his memory…

Holly – the original Christmas tree

Did you know that holly was the original Christmas tree? Long before the Victorians introduced the custom of decorating fir trees in our homes, holly was traditionally used to herald the arrival of the festive season.

Make your own festive food station

Here at the Heart of England Forest we are always looking out for our birdlife, especially in wintertime when they can find food hard to come by. You, too, can do your bit by fashioning a simple but attractive Christmas wreath that doubles up as a magnet for hungry birds.
